Could, Would, Never Should

Published: 31 May 2019

If I could sing to you a song today,
I would choose to keep myself at bay
and merely stand on an unknown shore
to look towards the horizon.

If I could give to you a hopeful vision,
I would make disappearance my mission
and simply stand beside steel banisters
to mutter prayers to angels.

If I could look at you in obtuse angles,
I would turn my head away with invisible handles
and just stand on a dirty floor
to dissolve coffee in my cup.

I would pull you up when you're down.
I would push you forward when
in front of you, obstacles abound.

I would take you aside when
moving backwards seem the only option
and stand with you—

—if only you would let me.
